Mir Wali was one of the Mehtars (Ruler) of the Khushwaqt line who ruled a mountain state comprising the present Ghizer district as well as the upper Chitral. Mir Wali’s father, Gouhar Aman and Gouhar Aman’s uncle Suliman Shah were brave leaders who kept at a bay the advancing Sikhs and Dogras of Kashmir for many decades, and Dogras could occupy Gilgit only after the death of Gouhar Aman in 1860. Mir Wali ruled his ancestral principality till 1870, when he was ousted following the murder of British explorer George Hayward within his territory.
Mir Wali, though not known for his fighting capabilities like his father, nevertheless, he was a man of letters. Collection of his Persian works “Durr e Wali” is not available now and only a long Khowar love song is the only thing remains from him. Here, his great grandson, Dr. Ismail Wali puts some lines of this song into English verse:
ہائے ہائے ژان تو مہ ژان، غیروم نذر بام دینار مہ ژان دینار
تن تتے قربان پری ائے پھُک ژان خدایئی
دھاگہ تہ چدور مہ ژان تہ چلائے ادرس نوا
چھوئے ختانی روشتی کوروئے پنجرشو مس نوا
مہ ژان تان تختہ نِشی ائے شہرو موژتو گوئے نوا
دوو پری تختو کسئینیان حوران توغو روئے نوا
تہ دوروتے پون مہ ژان ݯوکتو غیر ناغیر نوا
مہ قالب ایہہ نو کسیران روح اچی غیرغیر نوا
موڑی مہ رفیقو دورئے توری مہ دور شیر نوا
